Letter from the MaCKRO Prez
By John Alsop
As I write the days are getting shorter. It doesn’t seem fair. But nevertheless there a lot of good races coming up. The USCA Flatwater nationals are August 7 through 12 in Warren, Pa. where they are held every other year. Last time around, Maine was well represented. It’s about a 12 hour drive, but probably as close as a USCA National will get to us for the foreseeable future, and well worth the trip. The course is on the Alleghany River with shallow and quick water. You also paddle by an oil refinery with a whitewater section right next to a four story high gas blaster flame thrower thingamagig! It’s Dante’s Inferno. I recommend a trip, even if you are new to the sport. Check out the USCA website for more details.
I’m not sure when this issue hits your mailbox but be sure also to consider the ACA and WWO Nationals coming up as well as all the other races on our rather full July schedule.
The club races/events are going well. Don’t be intimidated by the race appellation. Its really not. More of a drafting, packriding event. And we have MaCKRO-subsidized pizza afterwards! We have averaged ten boats or so in the two we have done and will schedule another shortly. We are a club and this is a good thing for a club to be doing so try to come out for the next one and bring a friend. Check the website message board for announcements, and also remember that there is virtually always a Tuesday night paddle in Waterville at 5:00PM
Cheers John
