Jackman Live 2 Learn Program Gets Kids in Boats
Submitted by J.B. Carron
The Live 2 Learn Program in Jackman offers a variety of recreational opportunities for students after school and during the summer. Over the past three years students in the Moose River Valley area including students in Jackman, Moose River, Rockwood and The Forks have had the chance to participate in this state funded program. The program’s goals are to increase student’s academic performance, provide culturally enriching experiences, and to increase parent/community involvement. However, if you ask the students what they enjoy the most they are sure to name the activities Live 2 Learn provides: map & compass, outdoor survival, hiking, biking, archery, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, rock wall climbing, and canoeing. The most recent addition to Live 2 Learn’s outdoor collection is the 10 Old Town Loon series kayaks. Students have come to enjoy the freedom and maneuverability of this unique water craft. In short, these outdoor centered activities have given boys and girls a chance to explore Northern Maine’s distinct beauty while gaining an appreciation for its natural resource.
