Letter from the Prez
By John Alsop

By the time this issue is out, whitewater season will be just about over and also our Maine contingent will be back from the Clinton, hopefully reporting a good result on the relay. Kudos to all involved in putting on the whitewater races. And isn’t it great to have plenty of water!

Flatwater season is upon us. A few races have been cancelled of late which is regrettable . However as had been said before, it’s not the shortage of races but the shortage of racers that is killing our sport.

I have been slow in getting a paddle group going here but I haven’t given up. FPL seems intent on draining Moosehead, or so it seems, because the Kennebec has been very high all spring and not conducive to pleasant evening paddles, nor has the weather for that matter. But hopefully soon on Monday nights. Jeff Owen is getting one going in Orono and Fran Cyr is working on one up in Aroostook. Eric and crew are busy down in the Brunswick area.

To get the ball rolling I would like to announce Club Race # 1 Tuesday June 5th at 6PM on Messalonskee in Waterville. Bring someone who hasn’t raced before. Pizza and beer thereafter. No admission fee. I am hoping we can do a second one a couple of weeks later in Orono. What do you think, Jeff? In any event, stayed tuned to our MaCKRO message board for further details.

In the Shameless Commerce department, I have a new bunch of Levas paddles which I am selling virtually at cost. Let me know if you want to try one out.

     Cheers, John
