PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By John Alsop
Hello again!
Winter has arrived since our first publication. It is good to get back on skis.
I hope everyone enjoyed our first “newsletter” published here in No Umbrella. It is a little hard to tell if everyone got a copy since we get no returns with the bulk mail.
This issue includes the flat-water schedule. There may be some changes as the summer approaches but this list contains the best information we have now. Many thanks to Flat Water Chairperson Alice Andrenyak for pulling the list together. On a related scheduling matter, Peter Blood called me and asked me to tell everyone that the Meduxnekeag River Race is scheduled for May 5th not May 15th. Please make a note on your calendar.
The February issue also features an article by Ted Kenyon on the “Classique”, Quebec’s 3 day 120 mile canoe race on the Mauricie River ending at 3 TroisRivieres, taking place on Labor Day Weekend. I did the race with Priscilla Reinertsen. Ted and Dan Rabinkin finished way ahead of us. We shared the very able pit crew of Carina Peritore and Janice Stuver. It was quite an event but grueling.
Also in this issue Eric McNett writes on the growing sport of outrigger paddling in Maine. Eric is extremely enthusiastic about ocean paddling and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Janice and I head to Florida on March 3, 2007, canoes firmly strapped to the top of the van. Once again we look forward to a gathering of 20 to 30 paddlers from all over converging in Inverness, in and around the home of the late Gene Jensen, hosted by Audrey Jenson. Plans are to redo her roof as well as paddle many hours, en masse, on the Withlacoochee, the Rainbow, the Silver, and the Weeki Watchie! The March Florida trip is a great experience for any paddler and I recommend it highly. One returns fully prepared for the St. George.
We look forward to seeing Bob Dean at the “Pickle” canoe race. His 70th birthday is the 15th of March. Happy Birthday Bob!
These pages are a place where our organization can print any submissions from our group. Don’t hesitate to send anything in. If you have any comments or criticisms, please let me know.
Sincerely yours,
John Alsop, President
