Mountain Biker of the Month: Ellen Nobel
By Deb Moulton
While participating in the 24-hour mtn bike race at Great Glen there was a rumor of a 10-year-old girl riding solo. Before leaving the racing activities Sunday afternoon I was lucky enough to run into Ellen Nobel with her dad and ask a few questions.
No Umbrella: How old are you?
Ellen Nobel: 10 (years)
NU: how long have you been riding /
Ellen Nobel: about 4 to 5 years
NU: How did you get interested in doing the 24-hour race?
Ellen Nobel: My mom does the Solo race and my parents thought I might be interested. My dad thought it was cool and signed me up.
NU: Did the race officials have any requirements such as an adult need to be with you on the trail
Ellen Nobel: I was signed up in the category 0 to 18. No requirements or restrictions.
NU: Do you know your lap times?
Ellen: Around an 1 hour and 20 mins for each lap
NU: What kind of comments have you received when people hear you are doing/did the 24-hour race?
Ellen Nobel: Wow! Excited!! Or oh.
NU: Would you do it again?
Ellen Nobel: Right now I am undecided.
NU: How many bikes do you own?
Ellen Nobel: a bmx, a road bike, and a mountain bike.
Me: Worst Crash ever?
Ellen Nobel: I was on a steep hill that was at too steep an angle. Scraped up my elbow and it (the fall) scared me.
NU: Do you have any goals for the future?
Ellen: I would like to do the Tour-de France.
Ellen did a total of 4 laps of 8+ miles each and won her category. (>32 miles) Her Mom won the >40 category with a total of 11 laps. Ellen lives with her parents in the Portland , ME area and continues to road an mountain bike. Go girl!!
