Brushes With Wildlife
By Jay Lee

Summer 2000, I was working for North Country Rivers on the mighty West Branch of the Penobscot River. Per usual we stopped at Nesowdnehunk Stream. As we pulled in my crew and I noticed a doe and her fawn (still with spots) crossing the top part of the waterslide. It seemed as though our raft must have startled the two deer because the mother took off in a panic. The fawn of course tried to follow but ended up slipping and falling into the first drop of the slide. I abandoned my crew and ran to the fawns rescue. The fawn at this time was being recirculated. Knowing the hole I jumped in, swam to the fawn, and proceeded to pick it up like a dog. As I was walking out of the shallow hole one of our wonderful guests screams.... "Jay turn around so I can take a picture". Me being the glory hound that I am chose pose for the occasion. Unfortunately for me the fawn had other plans and kindly proceeded to throttle my nut sac with its hind hoof. I then dropped the fawn back into the stream where it slides down over the rest of the waterslide (what a hero!!). The fawn eventually made it to shore where it was greeted by its mother who was probably even more pissed off at me. I on the other hand had a nut in my stomach for about two weeks. That is the last time I ever showed off for a custy camera. HA! HA! HA!
