Big A Surf Off 2005
On July 3, 2005, once again the mighty Penobscot, West Branch was home to the informal kayaking and rafting get-together known as the Big A Surf-off.
This event is all about getting out with friends. Sure, there is a competition, but that’s just the icing on the cake.
Due to higher water conditions this year, the decision was made on July 3 to hold the Big A Surf-Off, not at Big A, but at Newosadnehunk Falls.
On Sunday July 3, the weather was unbeatable. The company top-notch. And the fun never-ending.

Like always, the Big A Surf-Off was two-parts paddler silliness and one part competition.
Here are the winners, in no particular order
Matt Fithian – Award for Most cartwheels and best above the Falls moves
Jack Schurman – Award for Best surfs on Fluffy Muffin
Nate St. Savier – For surfing an inflatable kayak like a pro in the violent Big Hole
Riley Adams – Award for Solo surfing a raft in Kahuna
Jay Roy – Best kayak surf in Kahuna
Chuck Mathieu – Best cartwheel over the Falls
Big Joe – Award for being the best raft-flipping device
Braden – Award for his creative stern squirt/orbit wheel over the Falls
Huge thanks are due to WaveSport Kayaks for kicking down the delicious burgers and hot dogs to support local informal paddling events like this one, to Karyn Roy for volunteering her time to organize this super event and to Kristen Kaiser (and Karyn) for creating the truly treasured prizes for all the winners.
