This “Close Calls” story is about the near demise of the Paddlers Always Write section in No Umbrella...
It was June 19, 2003. There was a burly high pressure system coming into the Upper Kennebec Valley from the northeast. It didn’t look good for Paddlers Always Write... not good at all.
But then a creative editor threw something on the page at the last minute. Was it good? No. Was it about the river? Not hardly. But it did salvage the section for at least one more week.
Then the next week there many, many submissions from paddlers all across Maine. The Paddlers Always Write section was saved. Hurrah!!
Paddlers Always Write works like this: No Umbrella offers a specific topic for paddlers (or any reader) to write about for each issue. For example, the next topic is "Close Calls." Paddlers write in with a story, an essay, a poem, a useful tip, or a complaint loosely based around "Close Calls", and No Umbrella will print all the submissions in this section in the June 19 issue. Get it? Good... Now get writing.
