There we were sitting on the front porch of the fine establishment known as The Marshall Hotel. Several guides from a couple different companies had managed to gather around a table to discuss the usual guide talk after another day on the river. This particular discussion was typical: “What color is that car?”
The car that was in question was a Volkswagen Jetta. It was parked directly in front of our table so the Jetta became an easy target for us to talk about. It was late afternoon and the lighting allowed for many different theories to emerge. Red, maroon, burgundy, along with mauve and pink where thrown out to describe the color of the car. No two guides could agree on the same color, but what do you expect from guides. Finally Caleb got the right idea to ask for a non-guide, impartial, and ultimate decision from someone else.
So Caleb got up and walked over to a gentleman sitting at the table next to us. We all were curious as to what the gentleman’s answer was going to be to the question “What color is that car?” No one, not even us guides, who see and hear a lot from our customers, could have expected the answer that Caleb received.
The gentleman turned his chair to face us and in a deep German accent he replied, “That is R8-R8. I am the North American sales rep for Volkswagen and that is the factory name for that color.” We lost it! The odds of this happening were too inconceivable. Here we were, sitting at a bar in a town with a population of 30, jokingly talking about a Volkswagen and the guy next to us was North America’s top sales rep for the company.
