Welcome to Put-in
A word from our publisher
(by Nick Callanan)
Those of us who live, guide or boat in northern Maine all summer long generally rely on the river for
entertainment and word-of-mouth for information. Mostly, we live in trucks, tents or cabins without electricity or
television; and the only American radio station that comes in north of Bingham is WTOS. So, if you heard too late
about the June Dead River release or the bluegrass concert, you were pretty much s.o.l. But then, that's why No
Umbrella is here.
No Umbrella is a new school idea: This publication is produced, written and published in the river capital of
Maine: the Upper Kennebec Valley (within 90 miles of where I sit are the three most intense whitewater rivers in
New England). Its aim is not to shake up the politics surrounding the river industry, far from it. Instead, No
Umbrella is a place for river folks to share their knowledge, skills, experience, stories and art. Itís also here to keep
boaters informed on stuff like scheduled dam releases and where the party is at. And because there really is no
other type of publication around these parts, No Umbrella will also serve the local, non-boating community by
listing upcoming events and printing tidbits about the area.
I will be distributing this paper to private boaters and guides at Harris Station above the Kennebec River Gorge
every other Saturday, beginning with this issue. No Umbrella will also be available at several generous merchantsí
locations throughout the Upper Kennebec River Valley. It is free, wherever you pick it up.
I want to welcome you to the first issue of No Umbrella, I hope you enjoy it. If you are a river person, and you
know it if you are, then this publication is for you. So, read on and tell me what you think.
See you on the river.
ó Nick
